Madonna dell'Aiuto

A2 prints of the Madonna dell'Aiuto from the Santuario di Santa Maria di Piazza in Busto Arsizio

These lino prints depict the statue of Our Lady of Help, attributed to Fabrizio De Magistris. It is said that when a statue of the Madonna was being carried through the streets during the plague of 1576, she suddenly raised her right hand, as if to stop the plague in its tracks. The image of the crowned Madonna and child are still a common sight in Busto and can be seen on the local hospital’s logo. In my rendering, I pared back the details to the bare essentials, inspired by the ligne claire style of Hergé.
